Recently refurbished to a high standard. Comfy leather sofas, smart decor. Used to be a very shabby council pub, with clientele to match. Unfortunately on the other hand it's now almost completely empty. Although the website said guest draught beers, none were available when we went (a Tuesday night in December), bottles of Old Peculiar were to be had instead. So empty was it, the charming Dutch landlady even took our drink orders from the comfort of our sofa. The menu is rather steep for what it offers (not much under a tenner) though not badly cooked. If they can attract the new punters, this should b a welcome addition to the Crouch End pub scene which is rather patchily serviced at the moment. Apart from the Victoria Stakes at the bottom of Muswell Hill,( a great little pub) and the Kings Head (very smoky, and owes its reputation to the excellent Comedy Cellar "Downstairs") this is the only scrubbed pub with adequate seating and good food in the area. Didn't check out the garden which still retains it's bird cage, as it was a night in deep mid-winter. Should be interesting to see what crowd it can attract when the weather improves. Hope it works out. Milo Twix 2005
