This is the fourth time we have eaten here, last time for Valentine's Day, this time our 3rd wedding anniversary. Once again the cosy atmosphere and the excellent service accompanied the good food. We happened to chose the set meal as we both fancied what was there especially fish soup for a cold december evening. Although the fish soup was a little salty for our taste, the puff croute that topped it was a pretty twist. Our 2 mains of roast cod with lentils and guinea fowl in a rich creamy sauce were perfectly cooked and well presented, generous portions topped with shredded and fried celeriac with a side of seasonal vegetables. The overall effect of the food was a successful traditional take on Northern French with a slight modern twist. The maitre d's choice of a smooth white with quite a dark finish from the Luberon worked well with our 2 contrasting mains and was reasonably priced. We shared our 3rd course a selection of great cheeses (reblochon, pont eveque, chevre, munster) at the correct condition and temperature, followed by a dark bitter chocolate mousse which was quite fluffy and generous size even for 2 sharing and considerately brought out after we had scoffed the cheeses, and with 2 spoons. The only sour note was the table of local drunks who treated the whole restaurant to a loud diatribe on Michael Winner for 2 hours and insisted we all have an opinion. They might have fitted as hangers on in a Soho drinking club in the 50s but were not as witty or pretty as they believed. The maitre d' kept them under control but the usual crowd of polite late middle aged diners from North London were far too nice to have them kicked out as they should have been. Shame. Milo Twix
